Karen Farrell
Owner |
Karen Farrell was born a native Alvinite,
and is directly descended from one of the original settling families of the Alvin-Manvel
area (the Boones). Her grandparents, Art & Ethelind Schacht were founding
members of AGCC. She is very happily married to the other owner of the club, Pat Farrell, whom
she met in college. Karen and Pat went to the University of Houston-Downtown,
where they both graduated with honors, Karen with a 4.0 GPA. Karen was the student
representative (valedictorian) of her class. Karen and Pat have three children,
Misty, Sarah, and Sean (Little Rocket).
Pat and Karen have lived in Alvin
over 12 years, moving here a month after their marriage to care for her grandfather
after her grandmother past away.
"Though it was hard to see him decline
with Alzheimer's, his stories of dancing the 30s and of playing baseball in the
minors and welding in the Gulf are stories we'll always remember. We thank him
for bringing us to Alvin, and we treasure every bit of the five years that we
had with him, even the hard times," Karen recalls.
By trade, Karen is a technical writer and worked at BMC Software with Pat
until a month after they bought the club when she realized she couldn't keep
working two 60-hour-per-week jobs and keep her family, and she resigned to devote
herself to the new venture.
When not running the club, she
now works in her successful website design business, Farrell Documentation, which
designed, developed, and maintains this Website. (So much for not working two
jobs!)
When not engaged in either running
the club or designing websites, she is watching her son play baseball with the
Texas Wildcats select
team, which Pat manages and Karen directs (make that three jobs), catching his
pitches at the mound at the club, watching Sarah dance at one of her performances,
or watching her sing at one of her choir performances. Sometimes we get to do
both when she's in a musical!
Karen is also the president, treasurer, and secretary
of the largest nonprofit select baseball organization in southest Texas, Bay
Area Baseball Association, which serves over 300 teams a year (make that four
jobs).
Oh, and now she's working contract for BMC
Software again—five jobs! (She's not Type A or anything.)
Her
favorite things about owning Alvin Golf & Country Club are being her own
boss, making people happy, and keeping the tradition alive.
